JOHN HOREJS — A crisp, fall breeze blowing through golden aspen leaves. A vibrant field of wild flowers washed in bright noonday light. Windswept desert canyons quietly marking the passage of the eons. For artist John Horejs, each scene presents an opportunity to capture the essence of a moment in vibrant color. "I want to recreate with canvas and oil the incredible beauty I see in the world," Horejs says. "Whether the subject is a patio garden, the Grand Teton mountains, or a stunning sunset, I want the viewer to feel as though he or she is there with me, experiencing the beauty firsthand."
At one time, John Horejs thought he wanted to be a psychiatrist. After a few skirmishes with chemistry and microbiology, he decided he really didn't enjoy the sciences, and had a feeling that his medical ambitions were doomed. Throughout his schooling, he had doodled, drawn, and designed, so on a lark he enrolled in a basic art & design course at college. He also did some oil painting with his aunt. That was the beginning of his love affair with art. He was hooked.
John Horejs' art is spirit. His whole life and soul is on the canvas. The work conveys feelings and emotions that are communicated through his use of textures, rich colors, and shapes. Many collectors have commented about the almost mystic feelings of peace they experience when viewing his work. His paintings become an escape into another world that is untouched by the troubles of this existence.
The rich color of John Horejs canvases is achieved with the use of only seven colors and white. He uses the strongest hues, and mixes all other values, tones, and shades from the basics. Horejs works ala prima--wet oil onto wet oil paint, to quickly capture the colors and emotion of the subject.
Originally from Idaho, John Horejs maintains studios in both Arizona and Idaho. He has worked as a professional painter for more than twenty-five years. Studying with Sergei Bongart, Jim Wilcox and Michael Lynch, Horejs learned to capture the vastness of the western landscape and sky, as well as the patterns and colors of wild gardens.
John Horejs' work hangs in the collections of Paul Allen (co-founder of Microsoft), Steve Winn (Las Vegas resort owner and developer), Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorn, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Simplot, Key Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Boise Cascade, and Morrison/Knudsen, among many others.
