"Freedom Rose" by JB Berkow

Moved by the events of September Eleventh, JB Berkow set out to create an image that would embody her own feelings as well as the feelings of many of her fellow Americans. Many years ago Ms. Berkow had completed a series of drawings of women, one to represent each month of the year. Her favorite had always been the drawing of January. January's drawing depicted a women of great strength looking boldly foward all the wonderful things she was about to accomplish in the year ahead. This embodiment of forward-looking vision was just what she was looking for to represent the spirit of America's fight against terrorism. The fact that it came in the visage of a woman was even more pertinent and important to JB considering much of what were fighting for involved the basic fundamental rights of women, the right to view the world with unobstructed eyes, to receive an education or to obtain a job.

The Statue's hair is flying backward from the nape of its neck to imply swift and forward action, something the artist is proud our country has already taken. To denote national pride the artist put a tattoo of the American flag on the back of her left shoulder. The gilded rose in her hair makes her part of the "Gilded Rose Collection," but it also gives the statue's title of "Freedom Rose" its double entendre meaning.

JB Berkow started her career painting mainly figurative works while only occasionally venturing into the genre of landscapes. After several trips to Europe, and being totally overwhelmed by the lush scenes of Italy and France, her choice of subject matter completely reversed itself. Now firmly established and well known for her stunning and exquisite landscapes, she began to miss the figurative. Not wishing to return to painting the figure, JB Berkow decided to try sculpting them.
